Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Ask Questions about Air Mail

1. What is Air Mail?

Air Mail is a Internet/Intranet email program for sending and receiving messages using
SMTP/ESMTP and POP/POP3 mail protocols.

2. What is the current version?

Air Mail Pro is the most current version. Currently there are three different versions.

	1. Magic User Interface (MUI)
	2. ClassAct
	3. Gadget Tools (Native Workbench 2.x. This is version 2.2. No further development)

3. Why are there different versions? and what are the differences?

The original version of Air Mail used Visual Arts as the GUI and moved to MUI at
version 3.0. Since moving to MUI we had alot feedbacks on why MUI was chosen
as the GUI engine. Our answer back then was and probably still valid is: If there
is a better GUI system that is as easy, flexible and powerful as MUI then we will
port it but until then MUI will be our primary development of choice.

Now ClassAct has surfaced. ClassAct has some unique features but its not as easy
to use and flexible as MUI. ClassAct does not require alot of resources. So instead of
ignoring ClassAct we have now ported Air Mail.

Both versions have identical features. The only difference is the way the GUI works.

4. If I purchase Air Mail Pro will I get both MUI and ClassAct versions?

No. We might have special offers if you purchase both versions but why?

5. What are the new features in Air Mail Pro?

A number of new features are added to Air Mail Pro. Here are some of the features.

	* New interface for composing messages. You can now enter email addresses
directly in the TO: and CC: fields. Attachment window is now separated.

	* Multiple signatures. Up to 10 signatures

	* Log file to track incoming and outgoing messages

	* MIME Helper preference has been added. It is now possible to view any
pictures such as IFF, GIF, JPEG, PNG etc., play sounds such as IFF, AU,
WAVE, MOD etc. and animations such as ANIM, AVI, CDXL, MPEG,
	   Quicktime etc. using external programs.

	* More Forms.

	* Return receipt. Can notified when the user receives your message. (Only
works if both users are using Air Mail Pro)

	* Import and export Address Book.

	* many more features.

6. Does Air Mail have an Address Book?

Yes. Air Mail has a global Address Book and you can create mailing lists or user
groups from the Address Book. You can also import, export or print the Address
Book.

7. What type of Mail Boxes does Air Mail have?

Air Mail has the standard Inbox for incoming messages and Outbox for outgoing
messages.

Air Mail also have custom folders. You can create unlimited number of folders.
You can move messages between different folders and the Inbox.

8. Does Air Mail have message filters?

Of course. Air Mail can filter the following topics.

	* FROM - email address. eg: toysoft@spots.ab.ca

	* TO - email address. eg: toysoft@spots.ab.ca

	* SUBJECT - text. eg: Hello There

	* ORGANIZATION - text. eg: Toysoft Development Inc.

	* OTHERS - any text

With each type of filter you can apply the following actions:

	* NONE	 - do nothing

	* DELETE IT - delete the message

	* INTO FOLDER - store message into a folder

	* REPLY - send a reply or optionally send a predefined message

A filter report is generated after each mail check.

9. What are Forms?

Forms are unique in Air Mail and its first on any Amiga email program. A form
is just an layout with different objects added. Any objects can be added to a form
such as graphics, sounds, static text etc..

10. Can Air Mail send files?

You bet! Air Mail can send any files using uu or mime encoding. Air Mail automatically
encodes and decodes files. If a message contains mime encapsulated file, Air Mail
can execute the file. Eg: graphics, sounds and animations

11. Is Air Mail MIME complaint.

Yes it is.

12. Can Air Mail handle multiple email accounts?

Sure. This feature was built since day one. Setting up multiple accounts is as simple
as creating a new preference and then assign a hotkey to it.

13. Air Mail has hotkeys?

Yup! Air Mail has 10 hotkeys that you can assign functions to. eg: check mail,
open a folder, send all queued messages, open the address book etc..

14. Air Mail has tags too?

Frequently Ask Questions about Air Mail Problems

1. When I double click on the Air Mail icon nothing happened.

 a. If you are using the MUI version it requires MUI v3.2 or higher.

 b. If you are using the ClassAct version then you might be missing
    some libraries.

 c. Air Mail requires translator.library If you have Workbench 3.x then you will need to
copy the translator.library from your Workbench 2.x disk.

 d. You don't have enough memory. Air Mail requires atleast 512K of free memory more
    if you are using MUI.

2. Can not connect to my mail server.

Make sure you have entered the correct server name for SMTP and POP. Some Internet
service providers have both the same and others are different. You may want
to double check the preference and make sure that the Server, UserID and Domain
is entered correctly.

3. Air Mail says my password is incorrect.

Make sure your userid is typed correctly and that your password is enter correctly.
Your password is case sensitive.

4. When Air Mail goes out and check for new messages and it says there are new
messages but it came back very quickly.

There was probably an error when Air Mail tries to save the message to your
mail box. Make sure that the InBox Path in the Paths preference is correct.
To verify click on the icon right of the InBox string gadget.

5. How come I can not send files with my message?

  a. make sure you have the following in the Paths preference.

	UU Program: c:uuxt31
	MIME Program: c:base64

in Misc preference set the 'Method of Encoding' to UUEncode or MIME.

  b. If you have queued your message and then later deleted the file then when
Air Mail sends the mail if will not find the original file.

  c. If you send files please select uuencode or mime. The none option will send
it as is and will probably not work unless the file is ASCII.

6. I'm having problems setting up a second email account.

   a. Open the preferences and enter all the new account information eg: pop server,
smtp server, userid, password, etc... You can share the Inbox, Outbox and
Users paths for all your email accounts or create new mail boxes.

   b. select the 'Save As' button and enter a preference name. Try naming the
preference file to your Internet Service Provider. eg: spots.prefs

   c. after saving the new preference click on the 'Load' button in the preference and
load the first preference file (the one you always use). Goto the Hotkey keys preference
and then select a hotkey and cycle to 'Load Prefs' as the action. Click on the icon
right of the string gadget and then enter ENVARC:AirMail directory
in the file requester. Select the new preference file you have just saved.

7. Air Mail crashes when I turn on Speech.

   a. If you are running Workbench 3.x then you will need the translator.library and
the narrator.device. Check you LIB: and Devices: directories for these files. If
you do not have them then copy them from your Workbench 2.x disk.

   b. make sure that the translator.library and narrator.device is compatible with your
	system especially with WorkBench 3.x

8. How come I can't open Air Mail on a public screen in MUI?

This is a good question. Some users were able to open a public screen and
some can't. If your system is running low on Ram then MUI may not be able
to allocate resources for the new screen. Try running 'Avail flush' in shell
to release the cache.

9. Why does Air Mail take soon long to read a large message with attachment?

The reason is simple. Air Mail scans the message to determine what type of
attachment it is and then it tries to decode it. If the message has multiple
files then Air Mail will decode each part separately. Once its decoded Air Mail
then scans the Helper database and compare the mime type to call the external program.

10. When I try to compose a message the text editor is missing.

This is because you have incorrectly installed Air Mail and your current
configuration is missing the Forms. Forms are stored in the Users directory.
Check your Users/Forms directory. If its missing then reinstall or create
a directory called Forms in the Users directory then copy all the Forms
from the original archive. The Users path is in the Paths preference.

11. What is the Receipt On/Off button?

This feature allows you to get notification when the recipient(s) receives your
message. A receipt is sent you to when the user receives the message. This does
not mean the users has read your message it only tells you that the message has be
received.

12. When I send my message each line is only 10 characters long.

Goto the Editor preference and set the 'Word Wrap' to a higher number.

13. How do I turn off automatic mail check?

Goto the Misc Preference and set the number of minutes to 0 or to a
very high number.

14. I have set up some filters and they are not working?

Did you remember to turn on the 'Filter On' option in the Options Preference?

15. I'm running on 640 x 200 screen and using MUI. The fonts are so small
that its impossible to see.

This is MUI's fault because it can not fix all the objects on the 640 x 200
screen and thus it defaults the font to size 5. This affects the entire
application. To fix this problem do the following:

a. Open the ScreenMode program in the Prefs on your Workbench.

b. Uncheck the default settings for Width and Height.

c. Enter the following for the Width and Height.

	 widht = 800
	 height = 600

d. Check the 'Auto Scroll' check box.

e. Select 'Save'

What the above does is set your screen to 800 x 600 with auto scroll. If you
are using a custom screen then set the screen witdth and height. Now
restart Air Mail again.

16. Icons are great but I can't always remember what they are.

If you are using MUI then you can turn on the 'Bubble Help' feature. Goto
the 'Options Preference' and check the 'Help On' checkbox.

17. How do I create my own Forms?

Right now you can't. In the future release you can create your own
forms.
